Three Things to Know About VA Ratings
1. Every condition has its own criteria
The VA’s rating schedule (38 CFR Part 4) gives each condition a diagnostic code, and each code spells out what earns 10%, 30%, 50% and so on. Knowing those criteria tells you what evidence matters.
2. Ratings don’t simply add up
The VA combines ratings with a “whole person” formula and rounds to the nearest 10%. Two 50% ratings combine to 75%, which rounds to 80%. See it for yourself in the calculator.
3. Secondary conditions count
A service-connected condition that causes another one, like a bad knee wearing out your hip, can add a separate rating. Many veterans leave these on the table.
