Navigating the VA From Salina

What Salina-area veterans should know about VA care, exams and free help.

Health care

Salina VA Clinic

The Salina VA Clinic is part of VA Wichita Health Care. Documenting your symptoms at every visit builds the treatment record that supports a claim.

C&P exams

Exams Closer to Home

C&P exams may be in Wichita, with a VA-contracted examiner closer to Salina, or by telehealth for some conditions. Reach out to the scheduler early if the location doesn’t work.

Guard training

Smoky Hill Weapons Range

Kansas Air National Guard aircraft train at the Smoky Hill range southwest of Salina. Range and flight-line noise is the kind of exposure that supports tinnitus claims.

Kansas Office of Veterans Services

State field offices and accredited VSOs help veterans file at no cost. We’ll tell you honestly if that’s the better fit.

Rating Increases

How to Increase Your VA Disability Rating

Many Salina-area veterans were rated years ago and never revisited it. There are four common paths to a higher combined rating:

1. File for an increase on a worsened condition

If symptoms are worse than your current rating describes, file for an increase with recent medical evidence. The VA rates on current severity, so recent treatment records and a clear description of flare-ups matter.

2. Claim secondary conditions

A service-connected condition can cause others: sleep apnea or depression secondary to PTSD, radiculopathy secondary to a back injury, knee or hip problems from an altered gait. Each can be rated separately.

3. Look for conditions you never claimed, and TDIU

Tinnitus, PACT Act presumptives and old injuries are commonly missed. If service-connected conditions keep you from holding steady work, Individual Unemployability (TDIU) can pay at the 100% rate.

4. Respond fast if the VA proposes a reduction

If you get a notice that the VA plans to reduce your rating, you generally have 60 days to send evidence, and requesting a hearing within 30 days keeps your payments unchanged until it's held.
